{"id":21,"date":"2025-12-10T10:57:38","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T15:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/borderslab\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2025-12-21T07:16:59","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T12:16:59","slug":"participate","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/borderslab\/participate\/","title":{"rendered":"Participate in a research study!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are interested in being contacted about ongoing studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/borderslab\/2025\/12\/11\/239\/\">please fill out this form to contact us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Who we are looking for:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Volunteers over the age of 18 years with no history of swallowing or cough disorders and no history of neurological disease, head and neck cancer, or stroke.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Volunteers with a diagnosis of Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>You may be asked to:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Produce speech<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Produce a cough on command<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Breathe a sensory stimulus that may or may not make you cough<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Swallow food or liquid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The following types of data may be collected:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Acoustics via a microphone<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Airflow while wearing a facemask<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Body movements from your chest muscles and muscles from the surface of your skin<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Brain activity measured from a cap that uses light and sensors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Swallowing Therapy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The Boston University Academic Speech, Language, &amp; Hearing Center offers swallowing therapy! Our expert swallowing clinician is Rachael Kammer. If you have been diagnosed with a swallowing problem (dysphagia) or if you have problems with swallowing or speech because of Parkinson\u2019s disease, please <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/borderslab\/2025\/12\/11\/239\/\">contact us<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Where is our lab located?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Boston University \u2013 Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences<br \/>\n635 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 340 \u2013 3rd floor<br \/>\nBoston, MA 02215<\/p>\n<p>From the main entrance, the elevator is to your left. Proceed to the 3rd floor.<br \/>\nFollow the one-way signs to your left and around one turn.
