Practicum for Psychology Trainees

This practicum opportunity is designed for clinical psychology doctoral students who are later on in their training (3rd or 4th year). Eligible students also must have completed at least one year of supervised training in behavioral medicine and/or cognitive behavioral therapy.

This opportunity is ideal for a student interested in pursuing clinical work in both clinical research and traditional clinical settings with a focus on caring for patients with substance use disorders and HIV from underserved and multiply minoritized backgrounds. About half of clinical time will be in clinical research trials as an interventionist and conducting diagnostic assessments and the other half will be in clinical settings including Integrated Behavioral Health within the Center for Infectious Diseases, Low-Barrier “Bridge” Clinics, and/or the Addiction Psychiatry Treatment Program.

The practicum is designed to be a 16-20 hour/week commitment with at least 25% in patient contact and at least 50% in service-related activities, although the time commitment is negotiable. Students will work closely with faculty (licensed clinical psychologists) and have the opportunity to attend weekly staff meetings, monthly journal club, and may attend psychiatry grand rounds. Students will participate in: behavioral addiction treatment training opportunities, which would expose students to techniques for clinical harm reduction, cognitive and behavioral approaches to substance use treatment, and strategies to support recovery.

Clinical supervisors include Abigail Batchelder, PhD, MPH and Brooke Rogers, PhD, MPH.

Specific information for the upcoming 2025-2026 practicum year:

  • This experience will be hybrid requiring both telehealth and in-person attendance to reflect how behavioral health services are currently being offered.
  • Supervision and meeting attendance will also be offered via videoconference and in-person, depending on meeting, availability, and preferences.
  • Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in research activities such as presentations and publications, if desired.
  • Start date: This practicum will start on July 1st, 2025, or later, and continue for at least one year. However, there is some flexibility around this start date at the student’s request. An earlier start is also possible. The first month will encompass training on the therapy protocols for which the student will serve as interventionist.
