{"id":226,"date":"2019-05-31T16:25:42","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T20:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/asd\/?page_id=226"},"modified":"2019-11-26T11:16:42","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T16:16:42","slug":"project-early","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/asd\/project-early\/","title":{"rendered":"Project EARLY: Engagement, Assessment, Referral, &#038; Linkage for Young Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"309\" height=\"110\" class=\"size-full wp-image-234 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/asd\/files\/2019\/06\/Project-early-logo.png\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT02359084\"><strong>Project EARLY<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>A study to assess the effectiveness of primary-care based family navigation (FN) intervention versus traditional care management in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>shortening the time to diagnosis among children suspected to have ASD<\/li>\n<li>shortening the time to deployment of ASD services among those diagnosed;<\/li>\n<li>improving engagement with ASD services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With a population of 340 families of children ages 15 to 27 months who are referred for a developmental evaluation at Boston Medical Center, Children&#8217;s Hospital of Pennsylvania or Yale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Project EARLY Study Measures<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Primary outcomes:<\/strong> diagnostic interval and time to engagement in ASD\/recommended services<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patient-centered\/ Family Outcomes:<\/strong> social support, family stress, parental and family functioning (parental physical and mental health)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Additional data:<\/strong> CORE ASD symptoms (<em>ADOS<\/em>), child cognitive functioning (<em>ABAS, Mullen, Vineland<\/em>), and family use of supports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Family Navigation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>For all families intervention began at time of confirmed positive screen and continued for 100 days post diagnostic resolution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Family navigation intervention:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>manualized core intervention<\/li>\n<li>3 core in-person visits; yearly boosters<\/li>\n<li>active outreach to families<\/li>\n<li>ongoing individualized contacts via phone, text, email to address family needs<\/li>\n<li>cultural concordance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Family navigators were trained during a 4 day workshop on behavior change strategies, and training in ASD and community services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Care management intervention:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>clinic-based<\/li>\n<li>available by phone<\/li>\n<li>contacts initiated by families<\/li>\n<li>addressed needs identified by families<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>2<\/b><b>nd<\/b><b>\u00a0Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong> We are looking to complete a second ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) assessment for children enrolled in Project EARLY to track children&#8217;s stability of symptoms over time. The first ADOS is completed as part of standard care during the child&#8217;s developmental assessment at the clinic, but an additional ADOS is not part of the standard of care at any of the research sites. This second ADOS will be done about a year after the initial ADOS.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Vineland\/Mullen Measures<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong> Common measures required by NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) administered at 12-month follow up to access child cognitive function.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Evaluating Implementation of a Patient Navigator Intervention to Improve Access to Diagnostic and Treatment Services for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><b>Overview: <\/b>We are looking to understand the implementation of the family navigation protocol in Project EARLY as well as parents&#8217; satisfaction with and perception of family navigation. To do this, we are conducting interviews with research staff, clinicians, navigators, and parents about their experience when using Family Navigators.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Infant-Toddler (IT) Checklist<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><b>Overview: <\/b>This study serves as a supplement to Project EARLY and is examining the use of a new questionnaire, the Infant-Toddler Checklist (IT Checklist), for children between the ages of 11-20 months to see if we can identify any possible concerns sooner.
