March 16. Navigating an Injury In Barcelona

By Chamberlyn Morehead

When going abroad, it is good to prepare for whatever may occur. This includes buying international healthcare and medication when needed. However, you cannot always prepare for the worst. Believe me, I have experienced this thus far. As a performer and someone who likes to travel, injuries are something that is bound to happen if the body is not taken care of. This experience abroad has truly taught me the importance of listening to your body and asking for help.

Asking for help is something that does not come easy to me. However, I am grateful that I have leaders and classmates who understand when I need guidance on navigating a new territory. I compiled a list of my top 5 advice for when you experience an injury.

  1. Reach out for help from your leaders
  2. Pack/wear loose pants (especially if you have to wear a brace underneath)
  3. If you want to purchase crutches or medication, contact your insurance company because they may cover it 100% with no deductible.
  4. If you need to purchase crutches, consider that for the under-the-arm version, you will need a prescription. However, for elbow crutches, you don’t need one.
  5. If you are ever bedridden, definitely compile a list of activities that you can do in bed. Take it from me, you may become bored even though you can take a nap and watch TV.

I will admit that it was difficult not to be able to participate 100%. However, once your injury heals it will be well worth the sacrifice you had to make.
