We explore and create techniques from machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision to interpret emerging media, their role in mass and interpersonal communication, and understand the human and automated processes by which emerging media are developed, marketed, shaped and reshaped by users.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment66\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment66\" style=\"width: 478px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/aiem\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0218-636x477.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0218\" class=\"wp-image-66\" style=\"margin-right: 30px;\" width=\"468\" height=\"366\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment66\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The AIEM group\u2019s weekly research meetings are open to colleagues and students. If you are interested in joining BU AIEM, please contact the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/aiem\/people\/\"><span class=\"s1\">AIEM professors<\/span><\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BU AIEM is housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering<\/a> and is part of BU&#8217;s Artificial Intelligence (AIR) Initiative. Our team members are affiliated with various colleges and departments throughout Boston University, including the College of Arts and Sciences (Department of Computer Science), the College of Communication (Division of Emerging Media), and the College of Engineering (Department of Computer Engineering).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">BU AIEM started with a Hariri Institute incubator research award in June 2016 led by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/profile\/lei-guo\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Lei Guo<\/span><\/a>. Projects with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/pi\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Prakash Ishwar,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.bu.edu\/faculty\/betke\"><span class=\"s2\">Margrit Betke<\/span><\/a>, and collaborators led to first publications on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1077699016639231?papetoc=&amp;\"><span class=\"s2\">Big Social Data Analytics in Journalism and Mass Communication<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.bu.edu\/fac\/betke\/papers\/Sameki-etal-HCOMP-2016.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">Dynamic Allocation of Crowd Contributions for Sentiment Analysis during the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In mid 2018, BU AIEM has proudly graduated its first Ph.D. student, Mehrnoosh Sameki, celebrated a Google Research Award in the \u201cInformation Retrieval and Real Time Content\u201d category, and welcomed a new faculty team member,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seas.upenn.edu\/~derry\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Derry Wijaya.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0In the same year, the collaboration among AIEM faculty and students led to $1 million\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2018\/nsf-grant-to-address-media-overload\/\"><span class=\"s1\">NSF grant<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to address emerging media representation and effects.<\/p>\n<p><span>BU AIEM is currently working on a project to examine international news coverage of COVID-19 and its impact.
