She holds her Master\u2019s degree in Piano Performance and a Doctor\u00a0of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College- Conservatory of Music. Both as a chamber musician and a collaborative pianist, Dr. Cho has appeared in internally\u00a0and nationally acclaimed music competitions and festivals in the United States, Korea, China,\u00a0and Germany. Dr. Cho joined the faculty of Claflin University in the Fall of 2011 and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Piano\/Staff and Choir Accompanist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk Title:\u00a0Visions into the Past: A Comparative Analysis of Lisztian and Schubertian Influences in William Grant Still\u2019s Three Visions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><em>Three Visions<\/em>, an original piano work by William Grant Still, has been largely forgotten\u00a0by pianists, piano pedagogues and aficionados. This piece deserves universal recognition\u00a0as mainstream piano repertoire due to its great artistry and sublime beauty.\u00a0Composed as a suite for piano in 1935, <em>Three Visions<\/em> contains three movements entitled\u00a0Dark Horse Man, Summerland and Radiant Pinnacle. As assumed from their titles,\u00a0throughout the whole piece Still faces the intrinsic subject of divinity and human nature,\u00a0especially the world of after death. Another\u00a0remarkable characteristic is Still\u2019s unique way of using innovative harmonies in a very\u00a0sophisticated and subtle way. As Franz Schubert did in\u00a0his piano works, Still also employs unexpected modulations &#8211; freely shifting major and\u00a0minor modes and enharmonic tones between sharp and flat keys. Of course, <em>Three\u00a0Visions<\/em> shares modernistic musical features which other works by his contemporary\u00a0composers had, such as use of tone-clusters &amp; complex cross-rhythm and percussive\u00a0use of the piano.<\/p>\n<p>In this lecture recital session, general characteristics, connection to other major classical\u00a0composers, and innovative musical features will be discussed.
