REVIEW: Lauv @ House of Blues 10/7

By Grace Lauson

This past Monday night, Lauv took the stage for his first of two sold-out shows at The House of Blues. He played songs off his I met you when I was 18 album, singles from his ~how i’m feeling~ album, coming out March 6th, and a few unreleased songs. Fans flooded the venue to support Lauv and sing along.

The show began with Bülow; a 19-year-old German singer with over 3.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify and collaborations with artists such as The Chainsmokers and Ty Dolla $ign. She sang her hit songs “Not a Love Song” and “Two Punks in Love,” among others, which showed off her impressive vocal range and passion for her music.

Soon later, Lauv took the stage accompanied by his two band members and screams from his passionate fan base. A theme of rainbow was immediately apparent as he strutted out in rainbow-colored pants and a neon blue hoodie. Colorful lights flashed behind him and bright assorted graphics were projected in the background. These impressive graphics would continue to play throughout the show, adding a great visual component.

He started the set with his hit songs “Drugs & The Internet” and “Paris in the Rain.” He immediately brought great energy to the stage and continually interacted with the crowd. On a couple of occasions, he threw his guitar pick into the crowd which sent fans into a frenzy. He also often turned the microphone around to his fans, encouraging the crowd to sing along.

Lauv continued playing both upbeat music and slower songs including “I’m So Tired…” and his new single “Sims.” Throughout the show, he sang while seamlessly alternating between instruments including a variety of guitars and a piano. He often expressed his gratitude for the support and exclaimed how crazy it is to be where he is today. His humble attitude matched with extreme musical talent was nothing short of incredible.

The topic of mental health was a focus throughout the whole show, making it very personal. Lauv often explained the meaning behind his songs before playing them. Before playing a new song titled “Sad Forever” he left the stage and the room when dark. Words were projected onto the stage and a voice-over of Lauv explaining his struggles with mental health, break ups, lack of confidence, and more played. He then returned to the stage to perform the song with confidence. He later explained how far he has come and explained the importance of getting help when struggling with mental health.

Lauv ended the show with an encore including “Never Not” and his most popular song “I Like Me Better.” Lauv radiated positivity from the beginning to the end of his set and it seems as if his career is only going up from here!
