Audio / Video Recording Facilities 20171024 meeting discussion

Training in use of the equipment for both locations is required for first-time users.

CRC Mugar Library. Faculty Audio/Video Recording Studio Room 401a. Faculty and staff can use the room. Reservations can be made using the Mugar system as if the room is a book. After a training session, the room can then be reserved for up to 3 hours.

MedCampus: Godley Digital Media Studio. The Medical Campus Education Media unit has its own reservation system for the studio. Clarification is needed as to use of this resource but likely it is limited to MedCampus faculty and staff.

Accessibility – WordPress Guidelines 20171024 meeting Ron Yeany: Maintaining accessible content

Mend broken links to help keep pages accessible and improve SEO. Request a “link check” at least once a year from IS&T Help or ithelp@bu.edu. A utility crawls through entire web site for broken links.

TSG VCS Feedback 20171024 meeting Kilachand CILSE, Jennifer Rogers: appreciates that meetings are held regularly
Accessibility – Captioning Best Practice Slack 20171004 @Jennifer Rogers #imagedescription: “… captioning/tagging images to meet accessibility needs. My husband used to work on accessibility for ebooks at Penguin books and his advice was that it’s not always about writing exactly what the picture is, but what it is in context to help the visually impaired person make sense of it as a whole. So for example – if you have a PDF with regulations and a picture of a stop sign, it’s less useful to tag it as ‘stop sign’ and instead put something like ‘sign indicating activities not to do’. That’s a pretty clunky example, but hopefully it makes sense!”

“Language teachers teach language, we don’t teach technology,” she says. “So we should use free technology and easy technology. We don’t have to be computer geeks, but we can embrace what technology brings us.”

Accessibility – Website Images, alt text Guidelines 20170921 VCS meeting Mugar Library J-Jay Araullo: Distance Education is constantly debating how to provide alt text to describe images including for screen readers that will be helpful and useful not just in the present but in a future when Blackboard or another platform is not limited to desktops but can be accessed on mobile devices.
Accessibility – Captioning Q&A 20170921 VCS meeting Mugar Library J-Jay Araullo: Captioning of third-party videos

Capture Apple iOS11 Slack 20170607 @kenith: “Apple is rolling out screen capture for iPhone. Yes, the iOS 11 is going to let you capture you phone screen. Forget the computer, microphone, recording software etc. for recording a flip classroom video. Just throw your PowerPoint on Google Drive and voila! you’ll be able to narrate and record your lecture video. If you are playing a video on YouTube or any other video site, you’ll be able to make snippets right on your phone. Very Exciting!”
Accessibility – Captioning, copyright Q&A 20170726 meeting MedCampus Dr. Cassie Ryan and Lorre Wolf:

(44:36) Is live transcription sufficient for captioning? Some elements are not captured. Remote cart is for conversation and participation. Run Youtube third party videos through MyMedia/Kaltura.

(47:21) Copyright: Captioning a third-party video is allowed for the use of an individual who has a disability. [Referred to OGC as guidance is specific to each case.]

(48:27) Cost: There is no institutional funding for (captioning), this is the responsibility of departments and units to fund for themselves…

(48:35) RFP: to get lowest possible rate for hands on captioning

Accessibility – Captioning Guidelines 20170726 meeting MedCampus Lorre Wolf: “What should you caption? Ideally, caption everything that is instructional media.” She goes on to talk about how realistically, establishing priorities will help BU faculty and staff manage with available resources.

Captioning is REQUIRED (43:38) for “a class that has an individual (student, faculty, staff, or guest) with a disability who requires captioning for their access.” Caption everything prior to being shown or made available to the class.

Captioning is ENCOURAGED for:

  • a video(s) show in class, a class that is being live-streamed, or being recorded, and will be viewed widely and often
  • a training video on how to operate equipment or about special processes and procedures like care of animals
  • an online class
  • outward or public-facing materials, such as MOOCs, library content, promotional materials, marketing tools, and advertising videos
  • digital tools in the classroom, e.g. live chat or polling app
  • materials that will be reused or used multiple times or multiple semesters
  • materials taught by very popular faculty
  • if possible, materials that are being streamed

(53:15) Availability of captioned materials does not excuse students from attending class.

Accessibility – Captioning Guidelines 20170726 meeting MedCampus Lorre Wolf:

  • Try to purchase pre-captioned media.
  • (55:00) Procurement: Purchase software with built in accessibility features with the assistance of Disability Services (Lorraine Norwich).
  • Make use of free captioning as available on platforms like Youtube (50-60% accuracy) and MyMedia/Kaltura (70-80% accuracy) but try to edit captions for at least 98% accuracy and is time-stamped.
