HRSA Training Program

Boston University School of Social Work “In the Community Mental Health Training Program for Social Workers (ICMH)” provides advanced clinical training on empirically supported trauma, mental health and substance use disorder identification and treatment methods. Students enroll in graduate level coursework and join community-based agency staff and field advisors in participating in seminars provided to the New Bedford and the Lawrence/Lowell communities. These community-based seminars enable graduate level social work students, their field instructors, agency clinical staff, and community members to learn together, building trust and support to better serve the target population.

Student participants in this grant are enrolled in the BUSSW’s Off-Campus Programs (OCP).  OCP offers a flexible alternative graduate degree program for students who would otherwise not pursue higher education and enables non-traditional students to manage work and/or family responsibilities while being enrolled in an MSW program at one of the most highly ranked Schools of Social Work situated in a renowned university. Students enroll in field internships in the second and third years of the Off-Campus Programs, and field internships are often available within the students’ own communities. Students complete the entire program at the Off-Campus site in which they enrolled.

All Off-Campus Program Students, Faculty, Advisors and Agency Staff are invited to attend the seminars free-of-charge and continuing education credit will be provided. An evaluation of the ICMH program will be conducted to identify it’s effectiveness in order that it may be replicated and benefit other students.
