Dear Colleagues,

I apologize for the delay in sending these current Updates. We know that your office has been as busy as our offices because we have been to a few!  But hopefully, help is on the way, because this week, SHIELD hosted over 115 nurses new to school nursing at our Foundations of School Nursing Practice.  We welcome them to school health services!

I want to remind you all that our Regional Meetings, hosted by our Regional Consultants, are going to be held over the next few weeks and I hope as many of your districts and schools are able to send at least one representative to these valuable meetings where local and regional resources are shared among other topics of interest to current school nursing practice.  The focus for our meetings this year will be on leadership at all levels of nursing practice.

I also want to remind you that the SHIELD Health Equity in Schools conference is being held on November 7th at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA.  This workshop is to establish an understanding of how race-based structural inequities impact school health access and outcomes. This foundation will provide school nurses and ALL other school staff with a basic understanding of how racism is structural in nature and what that means for their work, their schools, and the communities they serve.  It is essential that as school health programs move forward in addressing social-emotional learning models, and how we, as leaders, can create more safe and inclusive spaces within our offices and schools, we learn to address all inequities in our systems of care.  We encourage all who share DPH’s commitment to advancing school health access and quality to attend this essential workshop! Registration is now open at: http://bucme.org/activity/4491  While space is limited, we encourage multi-disciplinary school teams to register and participate. This program will be repeated on March 27 and April 24 in other regions so that all might have the opportunity to participate.  We hope to see you there!

I’m also hoping that all the technical issues related to sending these updates and attachments have been resolved.  But please let me know if there continue to be issues with you receiving these emails. A reminder that these emails are all posted for future reference on SHIELD’s website at: http://sites.bu.edu/shield/ in case you want to search again for something referenced here.

Happy Halloween!

Mary Ann, Carol and Janet
