October 2, 2017

Colleagues,

It was wonderful to see so many school nurse leaders gathered together for our first statewide meeting of the 2017-2018 school year!  Thank you to all who presented – and thank you to those who took the time to attend (even those whose attendance was not mandatory!).  We look forward to seeing many more of you at our next meeting in December which will be held in collaboration with school psychologists.  Continuing education credits for both nurses and psychologists will be provided for participation at this meeting.  Please mark your calendars….and share this information with your school psychologist – for December 7th at the Holiday Inn in Marlboro!  More details will be forthcoming.

257 school districts mandated to perform the SBIRT screening in two grades by June 2018 have completed the required training.  (Note:  344 districts must be this requirement.   Of the 404 School districts statewide, 60 have no students enrolled in grades 7-12. Of the 87 districts that have not yet sent anyone for training, 50 are individual charter schools, vocational technical schools and one virtual school that are each counted as unique districts. School health personnel from non-public schools and Collaboratives (not covered by the mandate) have also attended trainings but are not counted in this total.)  Introductory trainings are continuing to be added to the schedule (available on the BU SHIELD website at:  http://bucme.org/node/1089).  It is anticipated that the Introductory trainings will not be offered after January in hopes that all districts will have attended this program in order to implement it in a timely way.  The SBIRT Essentials workshops will continue to be held until the end of March 2018, at which point it is anticipated all districts would have implemented this program in both a middle school grade and a high school grade.  See http://bucme.org/node/1090 for the scheduled dates, times and locations of these workshops.  Please plan to have all members of your SBIRT teams attend these programs as soon as possible!

MDPH and SHIELD are pleased to announce an exciting new workshop entitled: Racial Equity in School Health: A Groundwater Approach, which is being offered by the Race Equity Institute (REI) of Greensboro, NC.   This lively and interactive program will establish a foundational understanding of how race-based structural inequities impact school health access and outcomes. This foundation will provide school health team members with a basic understanding of how racism is structural in nature and what that means for their work, their schools, and the communities they serve.  We encourage districts to send multi-disciplinary health teams to this program, including (but not limited to) school nurses, athletic trainers, counselors and psychologists.  This course will be offered three times during the school year. The first session is being offered November 7, 2017 in Sturbridge, MA. Two additional trainings will be offered March 27 and April 24. To register, go to www.SHIELD-BU.org > Live Programs.  Please see the attached flyer to distribute to ALL school personnel!

Have a great week….and enjoy the long upcoming holiday weekend!
