Masha Gershteyn

Mariya Gershteyn’s short documentary film is a moving portrait of Kim Shechter’s childhood in the Soviet Union. He shares his earliest memories – from the start of WWII and the breakup of his family to the eventual reunion with his father. Shechter recounts tragedies and escapades from his life in an orphanage in Fergana, Uzbekistan. His recollections are interspersed with video footage and music of the era.

This film became a subtitle translation project for Anna Leah Eisner and Alyssa Dillon.
Subtitling is the process of providing synchronized captions with limited means and within limited time. Thus, the language used in subtitles is quite different from colloquial language.
