A Note About Health Insurance

For Boston University related travel, there may be a few extra steps you must take in terms of health insurance:

If you are a/an

Undergraduate Student:

  • Massachusetts law requires that you must be either enrolled in the Boston University Student Medical Insurance Plan or certify that you have personal health insurance that provides comparable, comprehensive health insurance abroad as well as domestically. Such plans should cover emergency and urgent care at a minimum, and provide at least $100,000 in medical coverage.
  • If your coverage does not meet these requirements, please refer to the GeoBlue Plan directions at the bottom

Graduate Student:

  • Boston University’s health insurance may not be enough to cover a number of countries requirements for international travel. If this is the case, please refer to the GeoBlue Plan directions at the bottom

Faculty or Staff:

  • Check the requirements for health insurance in the counties you wish to travel to. You can find these either on their websites or by contacting their embassies.
  • If your current plan does not meet the requirements, faculty and staff can also register for the GeoBlue Plan.

GeoBlue Plan:

The GeoBlue Plan is a way for university students, staff or faculty to have sufficient insurance on foreign and domestic trips. These plans are generally inexpensive and can be purchased on behalf of undergraduate and graduate students. For assistance in these instances please contact the front office as soon as you know the details of your travel. For faculty and staff, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Geobluestudents.com
  2. In the column that says “Resource Center”, scroll down a bit until you see the “Students” box on the right (please note that even faculty and staff should do this)
  3. In the box where it asks for a group access code enter: KZG-38057.
  4. Follow instructions and pay with a credit card.
  5. Once you are enrolled, all the necessary documents can be printed out from the website.
