ORCID Acknowledgement and Consent

Background

ORCID (http://orcid.org/) is an international, interdisciplinary, open, and not-for-profit organization that aims to connect research and researchers by providing an open-access registry (referred to as the “Registry”) of persistent unique identifiers for individual researchers, and to work with the research community to embed these identifiers in research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission.

Boston University is a member of ORCID, which allows the University, among other things, to create ORCID records on behalf of employees, students, and affiliated individuals; integrate authenticated ORCID identifiers into grant application processes; ingest ORCID data to maintain internal systems such as institutional repositories; and link ORCID identifiers to other IDs and registry systems.

The purpose of this Acknowledgement and Consent form is to help Boston University researchers understand and make an informed decision about accepting the terms under which records relating to them may be created and made accessible through ORCID.

Before signing this Acknowledgement and Consent, researchers are encouraged to read the pertinent documents that are available on the ORCID website. Thereafter, researchers are encouraged to check the website for changes and updates. The key documents currently include:

Please note in particular:

  1. If you do not have one already, Boston University will create a Record for you in the ORCID Registry. You will be assigned an ORCID Identifier, a globally unique identifier generated by ORCID. Your ORCID Identifier will be public information.
  2. You will have an opportunity to deposit individual data elements associated with linked research objects (e.g., links to articles, blogs, or other works) into your Record and edit these data elements.
  3. You will have the opportunity to mark Record Data as Public Data, Private Data, or Limited Access Data.
  4. Public Data will be available to the public through the ORCID Registry and the annual Public Data File. It will be available under a CC0 waiver for broad use by the public, including reproduction, modification, distribution, and public display. This includes uses for commercial purposes.
  5. To avoid making Data available for all public uses, including commercial purposes, you may mark the Data as Private Data or Limited Access Data.
  6. Private Data may be viewed through the ORCID Registry only by you and any Proxy you designate.
  7. Limited Access Data may be viewed through the ORCID Registry only by you or your designated Proxy or a designated Trusted Party (such as Boston University). You can elect to share a field or specific data within a field with Trusted Parties.
  8. When depositing links to articles or other works that are subject to copyright or other intellectual property protection, you are responsible for making sure that the deposit of these links does not violate the copyright or other intellectual property rights of a third party (e.g. publisher). Links should be marked as Public Data only if you are absolutely certain that you want to make the link available to the public for reproduction, modification, distribution, public display, and all other uses, including for commercial purposes – and that you have the right to do so.
  9. The ORCID Terms of Use govern your use of the ORCID website and Registry. It includes representations and warranties that you make to ORCID about data you deposit, explicit prohibitions regarding use of ORCID, exclusive arbitration in New York for complaints or disputes, and other requirements.
  10. The ORCID Privacy Policy describes the privacy settings of ORCID Record Data, the ways that ORCID collects information from users of the Website and Registry, and how ORCID uses and shares information it collects. Information collected by ORCID includes information you directly give ORCID; information given to ORCID by third parties; information ORCID collects from your use of the ORCID Website; and information ORCID collects from cookies and other technologies. It is recommended that you read the ORCID Privacy Policy carefully and check for updates periodically.
  11. The ORCID Record Dispute Procedures describe how to verify and correct data in the ORCID Registry that you believe to be inaccurate and that you are not able to fix yourself through ORCID record management tools. Under the ORCID Terms of Use, you agree to follow these procedures to resolve these types of disputes.

Acknowledgement and Consent:

  1. I acknowledge that I have read and I understand ORCID’s policies, procedures, terms and conditions as currently available, and I acknowledge that it is my responsibility to check for updates periodically.
  2. I agree to abide by ORCID’s policies, procedures, terms and conditions in all respects, as in effect from time to time, as they apply to me.
  3. I acknowledge that I am solely responsible for obtaining all required authorizations or consents to deposit data into my Record and to make it available according to the selected privacy settings. I represent that, to the best of my knowledge, the deposit of data will not violate the copyright or any other intellectual property right, or the privacy, publicity, or any other rights of a third party.
