Title The First Battle of Badr (Xareb Badar bu Njëkk ba)
Author or Owner Serigne Mor Kayre (author), Mame Mor Kayre (owner, grandson of the author)
Subject Battle of Badr, Islamic History, Hagiography, Wolof Ajami Poetry
Content The document is a poem written by Serigne Moor Kayre (1869-1951), one of the earliest Murid Ajami scholars and poets. It deals with the first battle of Badr, which was the first major military victory of Prophet Muhammad and his companions against their Meccan enemies. It is one of the most celebrated battles in Islamic history because the Muslim army defeated a much larger army. Muslims believe that angels assisted Muslim soldiers in the battle. The poem provides the names of the warriors who participated in the battle on both sides. It provides extensive details on the military leaders and activities of both camps, including the number of soldiers, the location of the fights, the number of camels and horses involved, Quranic verses that were revealed, and Prophet Muhammad’s statements during the battle.
