Title Biography of Lady Maam Jaara Buso (Soxna Maam Jaaratul Laahi Buso)
Author or Owner Les Structures Soutenant l’Université du Magal (author)
Subject Biography, History, Gender, Women in Islam, Education, Muridiyya, Virtue
Content The document deals with the life of Maam Jaara Buso (c.1833-1864), the mother of Shaykh Ahmadu Bamba (1853-1927), the founder of the Muridiyya Sufi order in Senegal. She is known as Mame Diarra Bousso in French sources and as Jaaratul Laahi (the neighbor of God) in Murid communities due to her piety and virtues. The text provides information about her ancestry, the education of her mother and her own erudition and virtues. As customary in Muslim societies of Senegambia, her virtues as both a woman and a wife are presented as the reasons why she was blessed with an exceptional son (Shaykh Ahmadu Bamba). Her shrine, which is located in Poroxaan in Senegal, has become a major pilgrimage site where men and women go to seek her blessings. A school system named after her has been created in Senegal to educate the girls named after her and to cultivate in them the virtues she epitomized. The document also reveals how women from learned families were educated and served as teachers.
