Subject Hagiography, Eulogy
Content This manuscript is a tribute to a scholar called Cerno Ibraahiima Hoore Doŋol. He was also known as Waliyu Shaykhu because he was regarded as a saint, a friend of God. The poem celebrates his promotion of Pular as a language of religious instruction and reveals the sadness of the Fuuta Jalon community when he died. His death is compared to “the sun, the moon, and the stars coming out of the sky.” His actions are remembered in the community. He led prayers, preached, and made people better believers through his ethical acts. He changed their behavior, most notably through his righteous character. As common in the stories of Muslim saints, the poet claims that Prophet Muhammad came to him when he was on his deathbed to guide him through the afterlife. With the Prophet and his companions on his side, the poet celebrates that Waliyu Shaykhu was guaranteed heaven for his righteous actions. He notes that he attained the highest rank of Waliyu (saint, friend of God) because of how well he complied with God’s commandments. The poet suggests that people who are associated with him will go to heaven, and that through seven generations, whoever is married to his descendants will be protected from hellfire. Those married to his offspring are also promised this protection. Prayers for the Fuuta Jalon community and then the whole world conclude the manuscript.
