Title On Divine Punishment 3 (Kuuɗe Lette 3)
Author or Owner Thierno Hamidou Ba, son of Thierno Ousmane Ba (author),
El Hadj Mouhamadou Sall (owner)
Subject God, Sin, Pillars of Islam, Prophets, Punishment in the Hereafter
Content This manuscript was completed on July 28, 1990. It is a sermon to the people. The author praises God and notes that He abhors laziness, embodies truth, and that if you are with Him, failure is nearly impossible. He begins with a long list of God’s attributes, focused on His incomparable acts and characteristics, particularly in His creation of the world. It also teaches the benefit of the five pillars of Islam: acceptance of Allah above all, five required prayers, fasting, zakat, and making the Hajj. The author emphasizes that the role of the prophets was to bring truth and trust to humankind. They convey the Word of God in an intelligible manner to humankind. He argues that despite this, prophets should be allowed to exhibit human characteristics. The author also offers advice about how to properly pray, and the devastating consequences that will come to those who do not properly practice their faith. The primary consequence that will face those who do not follow the author’s advice will be eternal damnation, even if they are Muslim. There is also advice about how to properly behave during Ramadan, particularly in terms of fasting and prayer. The author encourages the reader to be like the Prophet Muhammad in order to follow the correct path. One of the major concerns in living a righteous life and avoiding punishment is to not commit adultery or other sins like pride and disobedience. Prosperity must be exercised in a proper manner, according to God’s law. To avoid being punished in the afterlife, the writer notes that no matter one’s wealth or social status, one must be righteous.
