Jim and Barry, National Mission, Haydenburg, TN, July 1942

Barry graduated from Connecticut College in the spring of 1942, then married Jim Alter.  She explains in this section why she and Jim chose to spend several years in Haydenburg, Tennessee, waiting for the end of WW II.  Barry tells stories of her life with the “Hill People” she and Jim ministered to at the parsonage in New Bethel in the Cumberland mountains, about fifteen miles from Knoxville.  In addition to her summers in rural Maine, the years in Haydenburg prepared Barry for what would become her life in Northern India.
