Barry and Jim, along with other American missionaries in India, had been working to help churches – no matter how small – become financially independent.  They were stunned in the early 1950s when the American Presbyterian Church engaged in an aggressive drive to raise and distribute money to overseas missions.  Along with their cohort, Barry and Jim argued successfully for ways to limit the influence of American money on Indian churches.  Their compromise was to work with the ecumenical body of the World Council of Churches to fund time-limited projects to serve Indian churches.  With the WCC’s backing, Barry and Jim began the Christian Retreat and Study Centre in Rajpur, located in the foothills of the Himalayas.  Barry explains the purpose of the center and the role it played in the life of church leaders throughout India.
