Wastewater and Title 5

Wastewater (also called sanitary sewage and sewage) is water that has been mixed with residential, commercial, agricultural, or industrial waste. It includes either greywater or blackwater or a combination of the two. It can be treated and disposed of in multiple ways. This module focuses on the on-site treatment and disposal of wastewater with total design flows less than 10,000 gallons per day (gpd). Large on-site systems (> 10,000 gpd), sewer systems, and certain industrial and agricultural wastewater have unique contaminants and concerns and their own set of regulations generally enforced by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). The State Environmental Code (310 CMR 15.000), commonly referred to as Title 5, specifies the requirements for siting, constructing, inspecting, upgrading, and/or expanding on-site systems and for transporting and disposing of septage.
