CELL-MET is dedicated to supporting, developing, and inspiring the next generation of engineers. We have created a suite of programs to aid us in this effort. This work requires engagement all along the educational spectrum from preK to postdoctoral training to ignite and sustain interest, create a sense of belonging, build curiosity, and increase preparedness to enter the job market.
Research Opportunities
High School Students
This summer program provides hands-on research experiences for future engineers. Students work under the guidance of faculty and graduate students. Through this program, participants get a taste of life as a college student and a biomedical engineering major.

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates is designed for freshman through sophomore students. Through this program, participants get to conduct research in a number of laboratories and professional development opportunities that will strengthen any graduate school application or resume.

This summer program for K-12 teachers provides a unique opportunity to incorporate biomedical engineering in their classroom. Successful applicants will, first, learn about and participate in cutting edge engineering research. Then, they will get to work with other K-12 teachers to develop and refine the curriculum for their classroom. For more information, please contact

CELL-MET Trainee International Exchange

K-12 Education and Outreach
Student Ambassadors
Undergraduate engineering ambassadors are an important part of CELL-MET’s outreach efforts. These ambassadors introduce younger learners to the excitement of biomedical engineering by leading interactive, hands-on activities in the classroom, virtually, or at events. EEK!
EEK! (the Engineering Engagement Kit) is the result of collaboration between CELL-MET researchers and staff and 13 science museums. It is a suite of 7 interactive activities that are adaptable to a number of informal educational settings.

EEK! in Schools is a program designed to provide curriculum and support teachers in adapting our 7 signature activities to their unique classroom settings. EEK! has been successfully scaled for use from elementary all the way up to high school.

Engineering Expo
The Engineering Expo is an annual event at Florida International University. It occurs in February during Engineering Week. It is an amazing opportunity for K-12 students to explore the endless possibilities and amazing research happening at FIU. CELL-MET faculty, trainees and staff participate through opening up their laboratories as well as creating and facilitating activities.

Innovation Days
This annual two-day networking event brings together CELL-MET trainees and industry professionals. In advance of this event, CELL-MET trainees work in teams to develop a business idea and receive mentorship and feedback from industry partners. They then present their ideas at Innovation Days during the Perfect Pitch Competition.

Student Leadership Council
The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is comprised of one graduate student from each of the three key CELL-MET universities. Members of the SLC help shape the trainee experience by operating at the interface between senior leadership and CELL-MET trainees.
