Boston University’s Metropolitan College Announces New Criminal Justice Graduate Programs in Strategic Management

May 2016, Boston—Strategic Management in Criminal Justice is the latest offering from the Department of Applied Social Sciences at Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET). Offered as a graduate certificate and a Master of Criminal Justice degree concentration, the program of study is available on campus and online.

The strategic management certificate program and degree concentration are designed for experienced, mid-career criminal justice professionals who seek to advance into policy-making, upper management, and executive-level positions within criminal justice agencies. The curriculum comprises four courses:

  • Criminal Justice Policy and Planning
  • Criminal Justice Administration
  • COO–Public Emergency Management
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Decision-Making.

As a key course in the curriculum, Criminal Justice Policy and Planning will focus on strategies to break down siloes within law enforcement, the court system, and corrections, fostering collaboration and communication between the various criminal justice agencies and ensuring that community groups are included in problem-solving processes.

“The field of criminal justice must become more professional and advanced in the wake of terrorism, the emergence of cybercrime, questions of police legitimacy, and stagnant correctional outcomes in terms of recidivism among offenders,” said Dr. Mary Ellen Mastrorilli, assistant professor and associate chair of applied social sciences. “A professional graduate education in strategic management will help groom ethical, business-minded, and analytical leaders who can keep pace with these challenges and lead reforms not only domestically, but internationally, as well.”

Students focusing on Strategic Management in Criminal Justice will build skills in research, development, and grant writing, and will be primed for advancement to leadership roles in those areas—with an emphasis on justice system reform.

Metropolitan College’s Criminal Justice programs draws on the expertise of faculty who are able to augment their active scholarship and research with vital hands-on expertise drawn from their careers in in the field. Faculty bring in-depth experience in criminal justice policy; strategic management; research and development; risk, security, and business continuity; and emergency response planning to the classroom, connecting students to fundamental concepts, applied practices, and concrete skills.

“We want to prepare effective criminal justice leaders who can carry out their jobs in a way such that resources are not wasted, and where problems are identified, analyzed and solved,” explained Professor Mastrorilli. “The Strategic Management in Criminal Justice certificate and degree concentration is for people who want to do the things that are needed to reform the criminal justice system.”

Metropolitan College Dean Tanya Zlateva added, “The new programs in Strategic Management add breadth to our award-winning criminal justice curriculum. Our online Master of Criminal Justice was ranked #1 by U.S. News & World Report this year, and we continue to invest in the program—which has an identical curriculum online and on campus—with concentrations such as Strategic Management and the recent addition of Cybercrime Investigation & Cybersecurity.”
